Google recently announced the launch of a brand new tool entitled Helpouts, which is a service-based platform that brings together global experts in a multitude of fields to assist users in need. The service is delivered entirely by live video chat between an expert and a user, thus creating a direct line of communication between the two parties.
Eight Categories to Choose From
Helpouts by Google is divided into a number of different categories, with a broad selection of topics available for users. The eight categories are comprised of the following options:
- Art and music
- Computers and electronics
- Education and careers
- Fashion and beauty
- Fitness and nutrition
- Home and garden
Nearly 1,000 Instructors
Google has patiently spent time developing its network of nearly 1,000 instructors. In terms of pricing, a journalist from The Guardian reported that he spent roughly £5 in exchange for 15 minutes discussion with a veteran writer. When it comes to dividing the revenue, Google collects 20 per cent for most transactions. For health videos, however, Google kindly waives the transaction fee out of goodwill.
A New Stream of Revenue
Since first coming to prominence as the world’s favourite search engine provider in the early 2000s, Google has become an all-round tech giant. The company is constantly coming up with new ways of monetising the internet and Helpouts is the latest example. For all intents and purposes, this new tool is tapping into the web’s never-ending appetite for video assistance. However, users might prefer to stick with the free advice available on YouTube and other sites.
Opening the Door to Information
When commenting on the launch of the exciting new tool, the company’s vice president of engineering explained that Helpouts ‘opens the door’ to the useful information that people leave in their heads. As of right now, the tool is only populated with gurus chosen by Google. It remains to be seen whether or not it will be opened up beyond invitation only – or whether it will succeed, for that matter. Prime Scripting will be here to report as more information is made available. (Photo credit to brionv)
